How to Download a Google Docs Resume as a PDF

The export steps, the settings that matter, and the five things to check in the PDF before it goes anywhere.

In this guide
  • Finish editing first
  • Download the PDF
  • Open the downloaded file
  • Check links and page breaks
  • Use a clean filename

1. Finish the Google Docs version first

Before exporting, make sure all placeholder text is gone, dates are consistent, and there are no comments or unfinished notes in the document.

2. Download as PDF

In Google Docs, choose File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf). The browser will save a local copy.

3. Open the actual downloaded PDF

Do not rely only on the Google Docs preview. Open the downloaded file and look at every page. Confirm that text is not clipped, section headings have not moved, and there is no unexpected blank page.

4. Test links and selectable text

If your resume includes a portfolio or LinkedIn link, click it. Also try selecting a sentence with your cursor. Selectable text is a useful basic check that the document did not turn into a flat image.

Filename tip: use something simple such as FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf. Avoid filenames like resume-final-final-v7.pdf.

5. Upload the same file you inspected

Once you have verified the PDF, use that exact copy for the application. If the employer specifically requests DOCX, follow the requested format instead.

Before and after export

Fix overflow first with this second-page guide, then run the ATS-friendly checklist. Photo resumes need an extra look at image quality; see the resume templates with photo. Portfolio links matter most for the Graphic Designer Resume, UX Designer Resume and Web Developer Resume. The same steps apply to cover letter templates.
