Academic CV

A long-form CV for faculty, postdoc and research applications, with no page limit and sections for education, positions, publications, presentations, grants, teaching, service and references.

CV or resume?

In the US and Canada a CV is the long academic document and a resume is the one- or two-page summary. In the UK, Europe, Australia and much of the world, 'CV' simply means resume. If an employer outside North America asks for a CV, they usually want two pages; the professional resume templates and two-page layouts will do. If you're applying for a faculty, research or clinical position, you need the academic format, and the Academic CV is built for it: education, appointments, publications, grants, teaching and service, in the order search committees expect.

Country-specific formats

Some markets have conventions of their own. The Canadian Resume Format follows the expectations of Canadian employers, which are close to US practice but with some differences in personal details and length. For markets where a photo is standard, the resume templates with photo are the right starting point.

Filling an academic CV

Use a consistent citation style for publications, list them most-recent-first, and separate peer-reviewed work from conference papers and talks. Teaching goes after research unless you're applying for a teaching-focused role. For an example of how a long academic history is organized, the Professor Resume and other education examples are useful references.

Common questions

How long should an academic CV be?

As long as it needs to be. Three to six pages is typical for early-career academics; senior researchers often exceed ten.

Do I include a photo on a CV?

Not for academic or North American applications. For some European employers, yes; use a photo template.

Should a CV have a summary?

A short research statement or profile at the top is common and helpful, especially for interdisciplinary work.
