The differences are mostly about tone. The Two Column Resume and 2-Column Resume Format are neutral and work anywhere. The Classic Two-Column Resume and Professional Two-Column Resume are conservative enough for corporate roles. For something with more character, see the Modern Two-Column Resume, the Navy Gold Two-Column Resume, or the Black and White Two-Column Resume. Longer histories fit the Executive Two-Column Resume and Elegant Two-Column Resume, both two pages.
These templates are built with a text layout that parses correctly in most systems, but a sidebar is still the part most likely to be read out of order. If you're applying through a large portal, either keep a one-column copy from the one-column resume templates or run the plain-text check in the ATS-friendly guide. Two-column layouts are also the ones most likely to spill onto a second page when you add content; this Google Docs overflow fix covers the usual causes.
Developers, nurses and designers tend to benefit most: a tool stack, a licence list or a software list is easier to scan in a column than in a paragraph. The Software Engineer Resume, Nurse Resume and HR Resume each show the sidebar filled with role-specific content.
Left is more common and reads naturally; right works when you want experience to be the first thing seen. Both are represented here.
